01

A short shopping list

For two burgers, gather 300 g ground beef, two burger buns, two slices of cheese, lettuce, one tomato, a few pickle slices, salt, pepper, and your favourite sauce. You will also need a heavy frying pan, a spatula, a clean plate, and a food thermometer.

02

Prepare before you cook

Wash and dry the lettuce, slice the tomato, and set the toppings aside. Divide the beef into two equal portions and gently shape patties slightly wider than the buns. Keep the raw meat away from ready-to-eat ingredients, wash your hands after handling it, and season the patties just before cooking.

03

Cook with confidence

Heat a lightly oiled pan over medium-high heat. Place the patties in the pan and let a crust develop before turning with a spatula. Adjust the heat if they brown too quickly. Check the centre from the side with a food thermometer: ground beef must reach 71.1°C / 160°F. Colour alone cannot tell you whether it is safe.

04

Toast, melt, assemble

Once the patties reach the safe temperature, add the cheese and let it soften. Transfer them to a clean plate. Toast the cut sides of the buns, spread on sauce, then add lettuce, the patty, tomato, and pickles. Serve straight away with a simple side salad.

05

Make it your own

Change one element at a time so you can notice the difference. Try mustard instead of ketchup, a different cheese, or thin red onion. Keep notes on your favourite combination. For a plant-based version, use a ready-made bean patty and follow its package cooking directions.
