On the Side: Complete the Plate

The best side gives the main event a little contrast. Think crisp vegetables beside a rich cheeseburger, a bright slaw with a smoky filling, or a small portion of golden potatoes. Build a satisfying plate with a few simple ideas and ingredients you can use again.

01

Start with something fresh

Slice cucumber, tomato, and red onion, then add a little lemon juice and olive oil. Keep the dressing light and toss just before serving. If the burger is already rich and salty, a fresh salad gives each bite a different pace.

02

Make a quick slaw

Thinly slice cabbage and grate a carrot. Dress a small bowl with yoghurt and lemon, or use oil and vinegar for a dairy-free version. Add the dressing gradually; the vegetables should stay crisp rather than swim in sauce.

03

Give potatoes room

For an oven-baked option, cut potatoes into similar-sized wedges, dry them, and toss with a little oil and seasoning. Arrange in a single layer on a baking tray. Cook using a suitable potato-wedge recipe for your oven, turning as needed until tender inside and browned outside.

04

Use what is already open

Extra lettuce can become a side salad, leftover pickle slices can brighten the plate, and a spare spoonful of yoghurt can become a dip. Plan the side around the ingredients for the burger to keep the shopping list manageable.

05

Let the burger lead

If your burger is smoky, make the side sharp. If it is spicy, try something cool and crunchy. Serve small portions first and leave room to adjust. A complete plate is about a combination you enjoy, rather than a long list of extras.
